WhatsApp users in Nigeria now have the exciting opportunity to send and receive money through the messaging app using Facebook Pay. This new feature, which has been in the works for some time, has been officially launched in Nigeria as a trial run. The announcement was made by WhatsApp, a company owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Inc.
For users, the service is currently free to use, meaning there are no fees involved. However, businesses will incur processing fees for receiving payments.

To complete transactions, users will need to enter a six-digit PIN or use their fingerprint. By linking their WhatsApp account to a credit or debit card, users can easily make use of this new feature. Initial local partners for this service include Banco do Brasil, Nubank, and Sicredi, with Cielo, a payments processor, also collaborating with WhatsApp.
“We have designed an open model to allow for more partners to join in the future,” WhatsApp stated.
The rollout of the payments service in Nigeria has already begun, with plans to expand to more regions in the future. Users in Nigeria can now conveniently make purchases from local businesses without having to leave their chat, according to the Facebook-owned company.
Small and micro-businesses play a vital role in Nigeria’s communities, and WhatsApp aims to support them by enabling customers to make payments directly through the app. This feature will allow users to not only view a store’s catalog but also send payments for products, enhancing the overall shopping experience.
While WhatsApp has been testing the payments service in India for some time, regulatory challenges have prevented a full-scale launch in the country. Despite this setback, WhatsApp continues to explore opportunities to introduce the payment service in other locations in the coming months.

With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp is evolving to offer a more commercial platform, allowing users to not only chat about products but also complete transactions seamlessly. This shift towards a more business-friendly approach is expected to continue as WhatsApp expands its payment service to more regions globally.
