The European Union (EU) is a unique political and economic alliance comprising 27 European countries. It plays a significant role on the global stage, engaging in diplomacy, trade, development cooperation, and partnerships with international organisations. The EU maintains a strong global presence through over 140 diplomatic missions, known as EU Delegations, which function in a capacity similar to embassies under its external development framework.
In Nigeria, the EU Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS collaborates closely with national, regional, and local authorities, as well as other international partners. As a key contributor to Nigeria’s development landscape, the EU is actively involved in critical sectors such as health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and expanding access to sustainable energy. It also supports cross-cutting initiatives, including anti-corruption efforts, combating drug trafficking and organised crime, strengthening the justice system, promoting democratic governance, and enhancing the role of civil society.
