Role Overview

The Social Media Associate will play a key role in managing and expanding HFG’s digital presence across major platforms. Working closely with the Senior  Communications Manager, the role focuses on content creation, audience engagement, and strategic growth of the Foundation’s online visibility.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves both strategic planning and day-to-day execution of social media activities.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Managing and growing HFG’s presence across LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Facebook, and YouTube
  • Maintaining and updating a structured social media content calendar
  • Creating high-quality written and visual content aligned with HFG’s research focus
  • Promoting the work of grantees, researchers, and institutional partners
  • Drafting, editing, and publishing multimedia posts
  • Monitoring and engaging with online audiences, including journalists and academic communities
  • Developing and implementing platform-specific campaigns
  • Tracking performance metrics and analyzing engagement data
  • Identifying opportunities to connect current events with HFG research (“news hooks”)
  • Uploading and managing video content, including event recordings and social clips

The role emphasizes proactive content development and strategic audience growth.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Candidates must demonstrate strong communication, technical, and analytical capabilities.

Essential requirements include:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong grammar and attention to detail
  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex academic concepts clearly and accurately
  • Experience creating multimedia content using tools such as Canva, Adobe, or similar platforms
  • Proficiency in managing multiple social media accounts and content calendars
  • Familiarity with social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite or equivalent)
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work independently
  • Experience building and engaging digital communities
  • Analytical skills to interpret social media metrics and optimize performance
  • Awareness of current events and ability to align content with trending topics

These competencies are critical for maintaining a high-quality and impactful digital presence.

Preferred Experience

While not mandatory, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Must have 3–5 years of experience managing social media for nonprofit, research, or policy organizations
  • Must have Experience with video editing and YouTube content management
  • Must be Familiar with editorial standards such as The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Must have a Background in communications related to international development, research, or public policy
