Job Summary
- The accountant will support the finance function in Ghana’s cocoa sector by maintaining accurate accounting records, processing supplier and operational transactions, assisting with reconciliations, and supporting financial reporting for cocoa purchasing, evacuation, warehousing, transport, stock movement, supplier payments, tax compliance, and field expenses.
- The role requires strong attention to detail, integrity, and the ability to work with both office-based finance teams and field operations teams across cocoa-buying locations for SCG Ghana.
Job Details
Core Responsibilities and Key Result Areas:
- Process supplier invoices, aggregator payment requests, field expense claims, petty cash reimbursements, and approved operational payments in line with SGC Ghana’s policies and approval procedures.
- Process payment requests to COCOBOD.
- Record daily accounting transactions accurately in the accounting system, including purchases, payments, receipts, journals, accruals, prepayments, and expense allocations.
- Perform bank, mobile money, cash, petty cash, and ledger reconciliations and escalate unresolved variances promptly.
- Assist in tracking cocoa stock movements, dispatches, warehouse balances, and related operational costs for reporting and control purposes.
- Maintain organized finance files, including invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, bank statements, contracts, waybills, delivery notes, store records, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare routine reports and schedules for month-end close, management review, internal audits, external audits, tax filings, and statutory compliance in Ghana.
- Support internal control checks by verifying documentation, approvals, payment evidence, and compliance with finance procedures.
- Assist with payroll data preparation, staff advances, travel retirements, withholding tax schedules, VAT support schedules, statutory deductions, and expense reconciliations where required.
Requirements
Educational Requirements:
- HND, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
Professional Requirements:
- Professional accounting certification in progress, such as ICAG, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent, is desirable but not mandatory.
Experience Requirements:
- 2–3 years of accounting, bookkeeping, audit, or finance experience; experience in cocoa, agribusiness, commodity trading, logistics, warehousing, or FMCG in Ghana is an advantage.
- Good understanding of basic accounting principles, double-entry bookkeeping, reconciliations, financial documentation, and month-end support.
- Basic knowledge of Ghanaian tax and statutory requirements, including VAT, withholding tax, PAYE, SSNIT, and related filing support, is an added advantage.
Knowledge Requirements:

Skill Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing financial transactions.
- Good numerical, analytical, and reconciliation skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and accounting software; experience with SAP, Sage, QuickBooks, Tally, or similar systems is an advantage.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work under pressure during peak cocoa purchasing and evacuation periods.
Personal Abilities:
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial and supplier information responsibly.
- Good communication skills for working with farmers, suppliers, aggregators, field officers, warehouse teams, transporters, and port-related service providers.
- Strong integrity and attention to detail, with the ability to work with both office-based finance teams and field operations teams.
