During the launch event, the program introduced its partner, Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC), and key technical training providers who will assist in its implementation. GYEP, which spans nine months, aims to develop technical and entrepreneurial skills in renewable energy, waste management, and green business development, all essential components of Nigeria’s circular economy.

With a significant percentage of Nigerian youth disengaged from education, employment, or training, GYEP comes at a crucial time. Tonia Uduimoh, Head of Oando Foundation, emphasized the program’s dual purpose of empowering youth and promoting climate action.

“The Green Youth Empowerment Program was created to bridge the gap in opportunities. With the potential for millions of green jobs by 2030, GYEP is equipping young individuals with the necessary tools to establish climate-resilient businesses and careers,” stated Uduimoh.

Beyond providing technical training, GYEP aims to cultivate a new generation of green entrepreneurs, empowering participants to launch and manage small-scale ventures that address waste and energy challenges while creating employment opportunities within their communities. Leveraging NCIC’s hub infrastructure, the program is designed for scalability and replication, with trained individuals passing on their knowledge and integrating green solutions into local economies.

CEO of NCIC, Bankole Oloruntoba, emphasized the program’s overarching vision:

“GYEP serves as a catalyst. To foster a thriving green economy, we must invest in technical, entrepreneurial, and climate-focused skills. This program shifts the focus from discussing youth unemployment to taking concrete steps towards a solution.”

As Nigeria strives to diversify its economy and meet international climate commitments, GYEP emerges as a leading initiative that aligns youth development with environmental sustainability. The pilot program sets a solid foundation for future expansion, especially as green entrepreneurship becomes a viable avenue for economic resilience.
